It's school holidays here in Vic, and I thought I'd do a quick update on the year so far. As I have mentioned on this forum, things started off very slowly this year for my son in grade 1. The literacy classes didn't seem to start until week 4, and it was week 5 before any learning was taking place in the maths classes. From what I have gathered from other parents it seems the problem was a combination of too high expectations on my part, and a sloppier than usual start to the year by the school. Things have picked up, so I'm not so worried about the issue now, however I will talk to the school about it towards the end of the year because I couldn't bare to go through the whole thing again next year!
We were also concerned that the work was not at an appropriate level for our son. We met with the school towards the end of the term and were very pleased with the action taken to resolve this issue with maths at least. He was basically moved up a maths class and further testing was administered to make sure he is now in the appropriate class. We will need to see how it works out next term, but it was definitely a positive end to what was at times a frustrating term.
I have also talked about how I have had trouble dealing with the apparent divide between my daughter's private preschool and my son's public primary school. Obviously this issue hasn't just gone away, but with the positive turn of events towards the end of term 1 in regards to maths in particular, I feel the sense of urgency has subsided. We still have more than 18 months before my daughter starts school, which gives us plenty of time to weigh up the pros and cons of a state vs private education.
Fingers crossed that term 2 brings great things!
