TOPIC: Very overdue update from us

Very overdue update from us 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
It has been such a long time since I last posted here, partly because I have been waiting for a resolution to what is happening with my son's schooling before coming back to report, and partly because the whole thing has been so emotionally draining that I just couldn't bring myself to post. Things still aren't sorted 100%, but I can give an update on what is happening.

Last time I posted our son was in grade 1 at Primary School A, where our son had started in Prep, and although there were many good things about the school (a large cohort of gifted kids being one of the most significant), there were many issues we were not particularly happy about. The most pressing was a classroom envirnoment which we felt was contributing to rather than helping our son's areas of weakness. So, we trialled Primary School B for a few days with our son firstly in a grade 1, and then a grade 2 class.

This all happened right at the end of term 2, and I won't go into too many details but lets just say everything looked good for a move to the new school for term 3 until the very last minute when we found out that the move would not take place until term 1 2009. We were quite devastated, as by that stage we had kind of burnt our bridges at Primary School A (in as gentle a way as we could manage), and the bottom line is we did not want our son to continue there until the end of the year.

SO, after much deliberation we decided to homeschool our son until the end of the year, and then prepare him to move to the new school in 2009. We also decided that we would take this opportunity to travel and we are leaving for Europe in 10 days time! (and that's another reason I haven't been on here as much as usual!) The issue of what year level to put our son into remained so the principal suggested our son attend grade 2 at the new school 2 days a week until we leave so that they can further assess the appropriateness of a grade skip. This has worked really well as our son gets to interact with his new friends two days a week (and we get a couple of days to organise our trip!). We haven't heard anything yet from the school about how he's going, but from our end things seem to be going very well. All will be revealed next week.

We have gone from being extremely upset that the proposed school change did not take place to extremely excited to be leaving for Europe so soon. We figure our son will learn so much about the world whilst we are away and are confident that he is coming back to an excellent school that can cater to his needs be that in grade 2 or grade 3. What a rollercoaster ride these last couple of months have been!

I have created a homeschooling forum since that is where we temporarily belong!
